The
E-50 Standardpanzer was an experimental German WWII Main Battle Tank
that never entered mass production. It was probably armed with a 88mm
KwK 43 L / 71 gun and 1 or 2 machine guns. MG34 or MG42 cal. 7.92 mm.
Design work on the E-50 tank was initiated in
as part of the Entwicklungsserie program, i.e. a program for the
development of German armor, which was to lead to the creation of a
standardized design for a series of six combat vehicles of different
weights, but using as many common components as possible. Analytical and
conceptual work under this program was initiated in mid-1943. The E-50
tank in this project was to be the main tank of the German army,
fulfilling a universal role on the battlefield, i.e. having the mobility
of a medium tank, but the firepower of a heavy tank. The hull and
chassis of the E-50 were to be largely based on that used in the
Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger II, while the turret was to come from another
experimental tank - the Panther Ausf. F - the so-called Schmallturm.
Ultimately, the E-50 was to replace the Pz.Kpfw V Panther and the
Pz.Kpfw VI Tiger tanks in the line.
